A Sanctuary for the Soul: “Building The New” Extends Its Regenerative Mission to Ghana
In the Netherlands, the “Building The New” initiative has been quietly transforming communities through thoughtful, sustainable redevelopment. By working hand-in-hand with local residents and emphasizing regenerative practices, the organization has rebuilt and reshaped neighborhoods with a deep respect for people, culture, and the environment. Now, this inspiring movement is crossing continents.
Their latest and most ambitious project is set to take root in Abandze, Ghana, with plans to extend its impact across various parts of the country. At the heart of this initiative lies a vision to create a sanctuary and healing center. A peaceful haven dedicated to supporting the bereaved, those battling depression, the mentally vulnerable, and weary souls seeking rest and renewal. Whether from the local community, across Ghana, or from afar as international visitors, all will find a space for emotional restoration, connection, and holistic healing.
The Story Behind the Vision
The seeds of this Ghanaian chapter were planted during a meaningful visit by Maurits van Hoogevest, the visionary CEO of “Building The New”. While exploring the historic Fort Amsterdam in Abandze, Maurits connected with the late caretaker, Mr. Joseph Arkoful. Joseph warmly guided him through the site, sharing its rich history and the quiet potential of the land. A deep bond formed in that encounter.

Tragically, Mr. Joseph passed away some time later. When Maurits returned for the funeral, the experience crystallized the urgency and beauty of his emerging plan. Accompanied by family and close friends, he immersed himself in the rhythms of Abandze life walking the streets, listening to stories, and feeling the warmth of the community. What began as an idea took on a deeply personal and realistic shape.

Inspired and moved, Maurits met with the respected elders of Abandze. He shared his vision openly: to transform the area into a regenerative healing space that honors the past while building a brighter, more compassionate future. The elders received the proposal with open hearts and warm enthusiasm. They pledged their full support, recognizing the potential for genuine healing, cultural preservation, and community advancement.

This collaboration marks the beginning of something truly special. A bridge between continents, cultures, and generations, rooted in sustainability, empathy, and shared humanity.

Below are some pictures and videos capturing the powerful moments of these visits and the spirit of the community.
